~ THE ABSENT COMPUTER ~
~ by Ken Butler ~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I open the study door; all is darkness. The room is in mourning.
There is no hum of activity. Switching on the light I see teardrops
trickling down the outside of the window panes. My desk is adorned with
lifeless snake-like objects. The light does not wake them; there is no
electricity for them. The juice is their life-blood and their constant
diet. They are suffering terribly and the 'bolt-holes', which they love,
have been removed. And where is the busy bee? The light does not bring it
Parker pen. It must have picked up it's iridescence from the dying embers
of the monitor. I hear it more clearly now. 'Pick me up. I am salvation.'
I pick it up and it quickly responds to the warmth of my hand. It begins
vibrating and the message is urgent. 'Quick, find some paper, I MUST
WRITE'. I find the paper; my hand is trembling. The pen leaps into
action. "Dear Ladbroke Computing", it begins, "Please return my computer
by special courier..........
